All you need is love, running shoes, and a sweetheart!

Love was fluttering through the air in Minneapolis for Lake Nokomis’ annual Valentine’s Day 5k!  I learned that this is the oldest winter race in MN! How cool is that!?  Jason and I make this an annual tradition, to share our love of running and each other. We have a blast! This year we got some fun shirts to make the race memorable!

.....................................................................

The morning began very casual, woke-up call at 7 am, and after 10.5 hours of sleep, I felt very refreshed! First, I chatted with Jason for a while, as we always do on Saturday mornings, then it was off to find my gear!  I was so tired last night, I didn’t get anything ready. My tip: ALWAYS GET THINGS READY! After a few outfit and hair changes, I finally settled on my race image.

.....................................................................

8:20 - We leave the house in pursuit of love and running!

9:00 - Arrive at Lake Nokomis and find a nice, close parking spot (about 1/2 mile from the start). Right away, we jog over to get our packets.

9:15 - We arrive back at the car and decide to wait in the warm vehicle until 9:40. While waiting, a bunch of cars park right behind us and box a bunch of us in… lovely! Instead of getting bent out of shape, we just decide to forgive, forget, and follow our hearts.

9:43 - Leaving a bit later than anticipated, the allure of a toasty car delayed our departure, we jog to the start to get our pre-race photo opp. Then, we find our place in the corral; toward the front to avoid a crowded race start.

10:00 - RACE START! With smiles on our faces and love in our hearts, we begin our pursuit of 3.1 fun, chilly miles!

.....................................................................

Mile 1 (9:07) – Starting at the front, there isn't much crowding and we settle into a good pace right away. This mile, my toes begin a much needed thaw!

Mile 2 (8:50) – I’m not sure if I’m slowing down or speeding up, but I’m feeling really good!  Someone has their phone blaring, announcing distance and pace splits every few minutes – so discourteous! So inconsiderate!  Please just wear headphones!

Mile 3 (8:29) - With one mile to go, I kick it up, and just go for it! I’m beginning to feel exhausted and get overheated; I shed the gloves and headband. Jason holds on to them for me – so sweet! He is a keeper!

Final 0.1 (8:10) - I finally pass the 3 mile sign, .1 left, and I’m ready to be finished. I’m pouring sweat and uncomfortably hot. It seems to take forever to reach this end! We were going to hold hands crossing the finish line, but I’m in race mode and forget.  Oops!

.....................................................................

Post-race, we get a really cool medal, water, chips, Salted Nut Rolls, Cliff bars, and most importantly, heart-shaped cookies!! For some added fun, we drop into Caribou for tea and sandwiches! Perfect race day!  Even though the race was way colder than expected, we have a blast! Being in MN you have to embrace the cold #theboldnorth I cannot wait for this race next year!

.....................................................................

For us, Valentine’s Day is very important.  We never miss an opportunity to share our mutual love for running.  Running is a great way to become closer to the ones you love!  Is there a race you and your sweetheart always run together?
